Transition from firefighter to company supervisor

Through a theory and assignment-based practical skills fire safety training component, you will learn the organizational structure of a fire department and how different departments operate in an administrative, emergency response, and incident management capacity.

You will also be taught the current trends and socioeconomic factors influencing the fire service, the strengths presented by cultural diversity, the professional code of ethics practiced by fire departments, and more.

This course is designed to assist individuals in making the transition from firefighter to company officer at the supervisory level.

In Fire Officer Level I, students will learn:

  • the organizational structure of the department
  • geographical configuration and characteristics of response district
  • departmental operating procedures for administration
  • emergency operations, incident management systems, and safety
  • fundamentals of leadership
  • departmental budget process
  • information management and record keeping
  • fire prevention and building safety codes and ordinances applicable to the jurisdiction
  • current trends, technologies, and socioeconomic and political factors that affect the fire service
  • cultural diversity
  • methods used by supervisors to obtain cooperation within a group of subordinates and the rights of management and members
  • agreements in force between the organization and its members
  • generally accepted ethical practices, including a professional code of ethics
  • policies and procedures regarding the operation of the department as they involve supervisors and members

Duration

Approximately 30 – 40 hours of online learning; up to 26 weeks to complete

Theory component is online; practical skills are assignment-based.

  • NFPA 472–Awareness

  • Exam and Evaluation must be completed in Alberta
