You will learn the basic structure of the fire department and the role of supervising officers within it, principles of leadership and supervisory skills, budget processes, information management and record keeping, and other important elements that make officers a vital part of any effective fire department.

The Fire Officer Training program also offers in-depth coverage of the features of response districts, administrative and operational structure procedures, incident management, how to maintain a professional code of ethics throughout the fire department, and the enforcement of operational policies within the department.

The Fire Officer Training program includes:

  • Fire Officer I–XBUS 8020
  • Fire Officer –XBUS 8022


Online theory: up to 26 weeks to complete; approximately 30 hours of online learning, including assignment-based practical skills


  • IFSTA, Fire and Emergency Company Officer, 5th Edition

Textbook can be purchased through the Alberta Fire Chief’s Association Bookstore prior to program start date.

  • NFPA 1001–Level I & II
  • NFPA 472–Awareness
  • NFPA 472–Operations
  • NFPA 1041–Level I

NFPA 1021–Fire Officer Level I

The NFPA 1021–Fire Officer Level I certification course is designed to give you the training needed to take the first steps towards becoming an officer at the supervisory level.

NFPA 1021–Fire Officer Level II

The NFPA 1021–Fire Officer Level II fire safety training course is specifically designed for those who wish to pursue a career at the supervisory level and assume a greater leadership role within the fire department.
